NothingElse is a cool little thing made in game maker about a boy who loves to read and how he journeys to another world because of it. That sounds magical, doesn’t it? Too bad NothingElse isn’t magical. It’s by Ian Zanotti, who made Imscared, which should give you an idea of what to expect. It’s a game about the horrors of imagination, the things that come for us even when we seek escape, and the impossibility of finding true comfort even in our most relaxing and familiar of pasttimes if the things that trouble us are truly bad enough.
I don’t want to tip my hand too much on what NothingElse is about, as the game only takes about ten minutes to play. It’s really straightforward, aside from one puzzle that waylaid me for a few minutes as I thought about it. This is a very tiny thing, to be sure, but that only highlights the things that it does very well with its limited amount of interactions.
