I don’t want to write the ‘old dog’ bio of the website, but it’s the closest thing to the truth I have. My name is M, and I don’t remember a time in my life before I played games. It hasn’t always been my first hobby, and I haven’t always been active about it, but games have always been hanging out on the periphery. Which means that when it comes to writing this bio, I sigh and feel like I’m too sick of games to actually care to write about my life with them at all. Games? Who cares? Burn them all.
That’s not even true though! Abnormal Mapping was a thing I bothered Jackson to start because I was tired of seeing people be cynical about games, and I wanted a space where we could do close reads and personal exploration of cool little games because not enough sites were doing that. The curious part was that I actually found that when I tried to be critical and thoughtful, most games big or small revealed a lot to me. So while day in and day out I have to fight a certain cynicism that comes from paying attention to ‘games culture’ for over two decades (be it Nintendo Power or early 00s GameFAQs or the eternal exhaustion of twitter), I actually think I’m more excited for games now than I’ve been since I was a child. Games are a hard medium to care about, but they’re the thing I do a lot of, so it’s worthy work in trying to find the value in them!
The last time I wrote one of these, I talked about being an indie guy, and hating shooters, but none of that is true anymore. Shooters can be cool (sometimes), indie games are as rife with garbage as big games (sometimes), and I don’t identify as a guy anymore (they/them pronouns all the time, please!). I try to play everything, but my childhood love for Nintendo and my teenage love of JRPGs means that I’m almost always whittling away at something too long for my lifestyle on my 3DS. It’s not even much of an exaggeration: if a month passes where I don’t work on a JRPG at least a little I get wistful about running away to just grind away at them forever, far from the pressures of the day to day.
Outside of hosting this podcast, I’m a former movie critic (you can still read a lot of my work here), a fledgling artist (just check twitter for that stuff, or any of our podcast/youtube art), and a generally voracious reader, podcast listener, and learner. I’m way into queer shit, cute things, and pro wrestling! I try not to be a grumpy old person about the world, but I often fail mostly because I’m very tired. But if you’re okay with that, come say hi on twitter, where you can find me @em_being. That’s it, enough about me, let’s get to some games!
